I think that most of the teachers at my school are aware of diverse cultural groups, something that got my attention was a statement that a teacher made about the students, she said that first we have to be like a social worker, what she was trying to said is that this children come from a very diverse culture, they come from a home in which a parent guidance a lot of time is lacking, so if we a teacher are aware of these issues, we know a litter better our student, we will be able to understand them better. I believe that these teachers face the reality of been a teacher, because they will make an impact in the life’s of these children, they have to educate them with the basic of life, most of this material these kids don’t learned at home. Since I’m bilingual I think that I would make a positive diferecence in these kids life’s, been to speak a language that they can comprehend would make their lives a lot easier. Many year ago I was also in a situation in which I didn’t knew the language and it was hard, so I know what they fell and I identify with their culture.
Truly, being bilingual in English and Spanish is a great asset although you need to be aware that there are at least 100 languages spoken in a district like Providence. This means that we need to be thoughtful about all of our students including the ones who speak little English and whose native language is not Spanish either!
